Why you should embrace Siri with CarPlay
Via Apple CarPlay you have iOS apps that you can use in the car within easy reach. Apps to navigate, listen to audio and even send messages. These CarPlay versions have simple interfaces so that you are as little distracted as possible while driving. An essential part that is sometimes forgotten is Siri.
Siri has been part of the iPhone since 2011, so it is almost ten years old. Only in 2015 Siri finally spoke Dutch. Meanwhile, Apple’s voice assistant has become a regular part of our iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac. The latest addition is the smart speaker with Siri in the form of the HomePod.
Siri has always been a bit of the slow sister compared to the other voice assistants. Therefore, there is a good chance that you will ignore the speech assistant. You may have tried something, but Siri didn’t really hear or understand you. Then the manual search or pressing a button is a lot faster. Do you have CarPlay? Then you really need to give Siri another chance.
Less focus
Siri works in CarPlay similar to the other devices. You can give commands that you normally do via a few actions on the screen. In the case of your iPhone or any other Apple device, that’s all about convenience. It’s simply easier to have Siri turn off the lights than go to the HomeKit app and find the lights there and turn them off.
In the case of CarPlay, Siri is not just convenience, but an essential part. Additional actions in the car are life-threatening. When driving on the road, all your focus should be on the road and traffic. If you then poke around in the menus of CarPlay and the various apps, you have much less focus.
Several studies have shown that the use of a touchscreen in the car distracts the user from their primary task: driving. Mazda has even chosen to completely remove touchscreens from its cars due to this insecurity.
Hey, Siri
Many cars today have a voice assistant button in the steering wheel. A good thing, because that will hopefully ensure that more people will actually use the voice assistant of their choice. For Android users this is the Google Assistant and for iOS users Siri. But if you don’t have a button, a simple ‘Hey Siri’ will of course also work.
Siri can then help you with everything. You can ask Siri to navigate to your destination in your navigation app of choice, or you can ask Siri if you can play music. Siri reads your messages and you dictate responses to them. All without having to touch or even look at the screen.
Is Siri perfect? Absolutely not. Searching for a specific song or album in Spotify is also a drama in the car. But it is definitely the most secure option, which is why we recommend that anyone with CarPlay use Siri.
