The iPhone dominates the global second-hand market with nearly 50% of sales
In these times of economic crisis, the market for second-hand smartphones is doing best, except in China, where sales of second-hand phones have seen a notable drop in 2022. Everywhere else, if we are to believe the Counterpoint Institute, sales increased by 5%.
In the field of smartphones, on the new and second-hand market, the same two players still share the lion’s share. Indeed, despite weak demand, Samsung once again became number one in sales of new devices in the first quarter of 2023, closely followed by the Cupertino company. On the other hand, when it comes to second-hand devices, the apple brand crushes the competition with all its weight: almost half of second-hand smartphones sold worldwide in 2022 have the Apple logo (49% precisely).

According to Counterpoint Research reportTHE worldwide used smartphone sales are doing very well, with a 5% growth. This figure could have been even more impressive if consumption in China had not been slowed down by the Covid-19 crisis and the restrictions put in place by Beijing. In this context, it was India and the countries of Latin America that contributed to the increase in sales, with growth of 19% and 18% in each of these regions.
iPhones are the most sought-after smartphones on the second-hand market
THE used iPhone sales increased by 16% over a rolling year, which is not necessarily good news for Apple, since these purchases are made at the expense of a new product and therefore do not bring anything to the Cupertino company. These statistics confirm in any case that the iPhone remains the device that best retains its value over time.
According to analysts at Counterpoint, ” Apple is the fastest growing brand in second-hand sectors and refurbished worldwide. This demand is affecting new iPhone sales and service revenues in many markets.”
