YouTube Shorts can now also be viewed on your smart TV

YouTube now makes it possible to watch Shorts on your biggest screen. The display of vertical videos is now optimized to look more natural on a TV screen. The feature will be available on game consoles and smart TVs in the coming weeks.

Vertical movies on a large horizontal screen. It doesn’t sound like the best combination and YouTube also found it difficult to make a good experience for Shorts on TVs, it admits in a blog post. Yet it has succeeded.

Shorts have taken on a more playful appearance than regular YouTube videos. They are bordered in white with rounded corners and the background reflects colors that appear in the video. That is also completely in line with the new design of YouTube. When a new video comes out, there is nice animation. Finally, there are also buttons to like or dislike videos.

Three videos at once

YouTube says it has considered several concepts for Shorts on TVs and has also listened to feedback from a group of test users. According to the first idea, Shorts were shown in the regular YouTube media player, but that looked too boring according to testers. YouTube also tried an alternative where three Shorts were on your TV at the same time, but that changed too much the main recipe, which was of course devised by TikTok at the time. The idea is that one video grabs your attention and not three at the same time.

Shorts will soon be available on your TV on TVs and streaming devices released after 2019. Furthermore, the videos can also be seen on modern game consoles.
