You can now livestream Google Meet calls on YouTube

Google wants organizations to livestream their Google Meet calls via YouTube. You can even pause the conversation as a viewer, so that you can look further at a later time. It is therefore a live stream that you do not necessarily have to watch live.

This is not so much about pleasant conversations you have with your friends on Google Meet, but about schools that want to announce information through this route or companies that make an announcement. It is therefore not available to everyone. You can only use this option if you are a paying Workspace user. Think of people with Google Workspace Individual, Google Workspace Enterprise Starter and Google One Premium.

Google states: “To start a YouTube livestream through Meet, you must have pre-approved your YouTube channel for live streaming. It can take up to 24 hours for your channel to be approved. To learn more about live streaming Google Meet events, visit the Help Center.”

This may sound familiar. That’s because this used to be possible in Google Hangouts under the name Hangouts On Air. However, Google removed that option when Hangouts transitioned to Meet. So now Meet is getting a little better, because it’s easier to livestream conversations.

However, it is an option that comes a little late. Not that we are completely rid of corona, but this would of course have been an option during lockdowns. Now it’s still useful, but will probably be used less fanatically than if Google came up with it earlier.

Do you have an account that should have access to this, but don’t see the option yet? That is possible: the rollout started from July 21, but for a large part of the accounts, the rollout will only be tackled from July 25, Google indicates.
