YggTorrent: BitTorrent is still alive! How to use it ?

BitTorrent is a protocol invented by Bram Cohen in the early 2000s to exchange large files with his friends. Very quickly, Bram was able to detect the potential of his baby and created a company of the same name. When we talk about BitTorrent, we can therefore talk about the protocol, the historical software (copied many times) and the BitTorrent company which has been trying for years to offer paid content without really knowing success. But what’s so special about BitTorrent? It is actually a download method based on bandwidth sharing and decentralization. Instead of downloading a file directly from a server, BitTorrent works with a .torrent file of a few kilobytes which will contain all the information allowing the person who wants to download to connect to other people who are either interested in the file (the “leechers”), or who already have it in full (the “seeders”).

A decentralized system

The coveted file itself is therefore nowhere, each user has a few pieces of the file and anyone who wants to download the entire file will automatically look for small parts on the right or left of others. As you will have understood, as this system is based on sharing, users must play the game and offer the file for as long as possible even after having recovered it 100%.

It’s a little more restrictive than direct downloading, but the films are often of better quality, there is a real community (and not people who come and go), there are rarer films and not the last 4 dung DVD releases. In short, it is a download method to consider.

But where to get these .torrent files? The best thing is to retrieve them from a “tracker”, a site specializing in this field and we know one very well to advise you…

The notion of ratio

YggTorrent is a semi-private tracker. You must, in addition to registering, make sure to keep a ratio above 1. It’s not that complicated provided you don’t download like crazy and above all leave in “seed” (sharing) the Torrents you have in your client. Indeed, the speed in upload is less than for download. If you download a 2 GB movie, you will therefore have to leave the file even at 100% (20 divided by 20 = 1, your ratio). If your ration drops below 1, you only have a limited time to bring it back up otherwise your account will be banned. You can very well redo an account from another e-mail address, but then you will lose your messages, your history, your requests, etc.

Be careful, YggTorrent is a site that does not only have friends. France is seeking to bring it down by using the LOPPSI law, which allows ISPs (Bouygues, SFR, etc.) to be asked to prohibit access to the site’s URL. YggTorrent therefore moves very often and changes its domain name to pass between the drops.
Currently the site URL is https://yggtorrent.re/ : based on Reunion Island, therefore. But be careful, this one can change, to keep you informed of URL changes check the official Twitter account here: https://twitter.com/yggtorrent_p2p

There are a lot of clones or people trying to interfere with the name so be careful…

Understanding and using YggTorrent

1/ The FAQs

Before downloading or uploading to YggTorrent, take a look at the FAQ first. You will see the rules of the tracker, the explanation of the concept of ratio, the prohibited uploads and a lot of tutorials. On the left you can also learn about the different clients to use and their configuration.

2/ Avoid files that are too popular

To keep a correct ratio, avoid fast and popular Torrents (Top 100): you will quickly have your file, but as many of you will be sharing it, the probability of having peers who come to “draw” from you is very slim and your ratio will have a hard time increasing. It’s the same thing with the new products, which are in high demand, but already have plenty of seeders who probably have better connections than yours or seeboxes.

3/ …just like marginal files

Also, don’t download files that no one wants to start with. Wait until you have a comfortable mattress of uploaded data to start downloading Iranian movies from the 80s with Farsi subtitles. If few people are interested, you are also unlikely to share. Opt for low-seeded but high-demand resources such as cartoons from well-known studios or porn (be careful not to confuse them in the end!). Even if you are not interested, you show your ratio.

4/ Slow down downloads

A good trick is to deliberately slow down the download rate. Indeed, the BitTorrent protocol is designed to promote upload (sharing) when you are downloading. As long as you are not at 100%, you therefore have priority. Why download as fast as possible if you want to watch your movie in 2 days? Limit the download to 100 KB/s instead of the usual 1 MB/s! It is also possible to limit the bit rate for all Torrents at once.

/ Stay in seed and don’t move anything!

Don’t be silly either and avoid moving your files: the client “knows” where they are and if you move them, they will no longer be shared! If you need to read them on another medium, make a copy and do not touch the originals which will be stored wisely in their folder. It’s the same for .torrent files: don’t delete them and stay in “seed”…
