Xiaomi yesterday announced its latest smartphone with 5G. It’s the affordable Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T. In this preview we will give you a first impression. What does this device have to offer?

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T in first preview

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 9 series was expanded with a new model on Friday; the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T. It is more of an extension than a successor to the well-known Note 9 series, the main difference being; the presence of 5G support. The chipset in the device is the MediaTek Dimensity 800U and this is assisted by 4GB of RAM.

In the article of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T announcement you can read all about the options and specifications. In this preview we will give you a first impression of the smartphones. Because we only have it for a short time, we will come back to you later with an extensive review.

Unpack and start up

We see in the package that a charger, cable and silicone cover are included. A screen protector is already attached to the screen itself. Benefit; the second SIM card slot is not at the expense of a memory card. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T is a fairly large device, but it fits well in the hand. The fingerprint scanner is on the side and does a good job. The texture on the back of the smartphone provides just a little more grip.

After starting up the phone, the setting can start, and then you have to pay attention. Do not agree with everything blindly, because as you are used to from MIUI, you get the option to help ‘improve the services’ by sharing certain data and the display of advertisements is switched on by default. Fortunately, you can turn this off.

We see a lot of bloatware, from apps for booking your hotel, to lots of games that don’t interest me at all. Unfortunately, Xiaomi has still not forgotten that.

Speed, camera and software

The speed of the device is sufficient, although I sometimes find it a bit slow. Not very surprising considering its price tag, but there are devices with just a bit more horsepower for this price. The camera seems to deliver excellent pictures on the screen of the phone, although zooming and a wide-angle lens are unfortunately not included. We took the photo below with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T.

The display of the Redmi Note 9T can be dimmed enough in low-light environments. The brightness during the day also seems sufficient. The sound quality of the speaker is also sufficient, but not special. You shouldn’t have those expectations for this price either. The volume is also fine. We find it unfortunate that Xiaomi does not immediately install Android 11 on the phone. At the time of writing, the smartphone is equipped with Android 10 with MIUI 12.0.1.
