Xiaomi is considering charging phones thanks to sound

A new technology that Xiaomi patented allows phones to charge, including using sound. Xiaomi uses a combination of devices to convert sound to energy. We explain how it works.

Charging with sound

No major breakthroughs in battery technology are expected, which is why we must hope for charging technology if we want to use our phones more comfortably in the future. Xiaomi has already teased a charger that can charge phones remotely, the Mi Air Charge. But according to a new patent, Xiaomi wants to get the necessary power for charging from sounds.

Xiaomi has filed a patent application for this with the Chinese regulator CNIPA, Mysmartprice knows. According to the description, it is a wireless charging technology that consists of several devices. First of all, there is a device that collects the sounds, there are several devices for converting energy, and one for converting current.

That is how it works

Xiaomi also gives a word of explanation about how all devices work together. The intention is to convert environmental sounds into mechanical vibrations. Then another device has to convert that vibration back to alternating current, and that alternating current is then converted to the direct current needed for wireless charging by a power converter.

The idea sounds really interesting, and we’d love to see it take effect during the demo, but it looks like we won’t be able to use it with our phones right away. According to the patent, Xiaomi plans to unveil the technology sometime in the next few years, but even then, the company must first succeed in making the concept cost-effective too, so that it becomes a real product for consumers. It is not clear if or when that will ever be the case.

Xiaomi also has a powerful 200 watt fast charger to charge the phone wired in 8 minutes, but that also has drawbacks. What do you think of Xiaomi’s idea of charging phones and other devices through sound vibrations? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
