Xbox Exclusive Game Thought Dead: Developers Don’t Give Up

Fans of PlatinumGames’ games scowled when work on the Xbox-exclusive Scalebound 2017 was halted. The developers have not yet written off the action role-playing game with a dragon as a sidekick and would like to continue production with Microsoft.

Scalebound: PlatinumGames wants to talk to Microsoft again

PlatinumGames, the studio behind games like NieR: Automata and Bayonetta scale bound debuted at E3 2014. The action-packed RPG with an open game world, a swordsman as the protagonist who should fight big boss fights together with a dragon, was planned as a joint project with Microsoft. However, the game lagged so far behind the intended schedule and also struggled with its own engine that Microsoft stopped development.

In an interview with IGN Japan, the president of PlatinumGames explained Atsushi Inaba and the (former) game director of Scalebound Hideki Kamiyathat they would like to revive the game. Inaba said:

Both Kamiya and I are serious. We’d really like to work on Scalebound again. I’d like to discuss this properly with Microsoft. (Source: IGN).

Kamiya himself added that development was already well advanced. He thinks it would be pointless if Microsoft didn’t do anything with it. There Microsoft owns the rights to the gamemust be on board for development to continue.

Many other games share the fate of Scalebound:

What’s next for Scalebound?

Microsoft has yet to comment on the matter, so it’s still up in the air whether Inaba and Kamiya can bring Scalebound back from the dead. At the moment they should have their hands full at PlatinumGames. This year alone are still Bayonetta 3, Babylon’s Fall and Sol Cresta planned. The Japanese studio also has a secret game with the working title Project GG., so it may take a while before Scalebound continues – provided Microsoft is involved.
