It doesn’t always have to be an HD webcam. You can also take part in video conferences with the Gameyboy camera released in 1998.

A Dutch Youtuber has found an interesting way with which you are guaranteed to cause a stir at the next Zoom conference. Instead of a standard webcam, the Youtuber has connected the Gameboy camera to his PC. From a technical point of view, that’s not even overly complex. However, you need the right hardware.

Because the Gameboy has no output via which the screen content can be transmitted to the PC, you also need the so-called Super Gameboy in addition to the camera module. This is a Super NES module released in 1994 that allows you to play Gameboy games on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. In addition, you will need an adapter that outputs the analog image material in digital form via an HDMI output.

Last but not least, this digital image material then has to be transferred to the PC via an HDMI capture card. They are available on the Internet for ten to twenty euros. The end result is then a live feed from the Gameboy camera, which in turn can be used in any standard video conferencing software. Theoretically, you could use the structure to play Super Mario in your zoom call instead. But that would probably be less popular.

The Gameboy camera takes pictures with what is currently an extremely low resolution of 128 by 112 pixels. You also have to do without color. After all, of course, the camera was not intended for video conferences, but for the Gameboy, which didn’t have a color display. As the video of the Dutch Youtuber shows, but the whole thing still has its charm. Especially if there are a few video game nerds among your colleagues.
