Bluetooth problem: delayed sound
A well-known problem with Bluetooth devices is the (small) delay caused by the wireless connection. You sometimes notice this when you play a game on your iPhone. The sound will then arrive on your AirPods (Pro 2) with some delay.
You notice this delay a lot less when watching videos. The delayed sound of the video is then eliminated by letting the image lag slightly behind the sound. The difference is noticeable when you receive a notification. That sound does come in with a noticeable Bluetooth delay.
AirPods Pro 2 have the new H2 chip
The AirPods Pro 2 feature the new H2 chip, which is much faster than previous chips. This speed can be seen (heard) in the delay caused by the Bluetooth connection. With the AirPods Pro 2, the delay is much less.
Developer and composer Stephen Coyle decided to test this and found that AirPods are increasingly less affected by Bluetooth delay. Do you still have the first generation AirPods? Maybe you should switch, because with the AirPods Pro 2 you have a lot less Bluetooth delay.
It is striking that the AirPods Pro score worse than the AirPods 2 when it comes to Bluetooth delay. Coyle hasn’t tested the AirPods 3, but it would be interesting to see how they stack up against the AirPods Pro. In any case, the AirPods Pro 2 are the best choice in this test.
Still (too) much delay with AirPods
According to Coyle, Apple is well on its way in terms of Bluetooth delay. However, according to him, there is still too much time difference between the image and receiving the sound to not hear it. When the difference decreases, it also provides a more realistic viewing and listening experience.
