With a new initiative, Sonos wants to become climate neutral by 2040

The advancing climate change is causing more and more companies to sharpen their climate goals. In the meantime, many companies have probably recognized that business can be done with sustainability. Consumers are increasingly looking to seals and certifications. The latest example of the move to a more sustainable philosophy is Sonos.

Last week, the manufacturer of various loudspeakers announced that all products should be climate-neutral by 2030, and that the entire company will no longer emit greenhouse gases by 2040. To do this, they teamed up with an organization called Vital Metrics to calculate the ecological footprint at every step of the life cycle.

Furthermore, short and long-term goals were set to avoid electronic waste and to achieve higher energy efficiency. These include, for example, the introduction of an energy-saving mode to reduce energy consumption to less than 2 watts when idling. However, the calculated emissions differ somewhat from those of Greenpeace.

Sonos says that 75 percent of the emissions in the life cycle arise after production, while Greenpeace claims to have found out that 70 to 80 percent of the total emissions are emitted during production. The values ​​therefore differ greatly from one another, the truth will probably lie in the middle.

Design changes should also be made to the packaging. New plastic should no longer be used; instead, recycled material should be used. The useful life of the devices is to be extended through further measures, including easier repairability, so that the device does not end up in the trash if it is defective.

Sonos is also trying to forget a somewhat negative chapter in the company’s history. In the past few years, the manufacturer has implemented a program that took broken loudspeakers from customers and gave them credit for a new purchase. The problem is that users first had to destroy their device before exchanging it, so it was not possible to resell it. Perhaps the new measures will help a little more on the company’s balance sheet.
