Will driving soon be a luxury? FDP Minister looks bleak to the future

With Euro 7, a new tightening of the emission standard is due in the next few years. How strict it is, however, is still open. FDP Minister Volker Wissing fears that the EU plans will cost German customers and employees dearly.

FPD man Wissing supports car manufacturers: driving must not become a luxury

“If Vehicles are getting more and more expensive without it being associated with more environmental protection Mobility as a luxury good.” This is the opinion of the Federal Minister of Transport and FDP man Wissing, criticizing the current EU plans for the Euro 7 emissions standard. The bosses of several car companies had previously warned that this could make combustion engines significantly more expensive.

With Wissing you will now have a high-ranking advocate. The regulation of the automotive industry goes too far for him. You have to “promote mobility, not prevent it,” said the Minister of Transport to the dpa (via Mirror). But that is exactly what the Renault boss is assuming: According to Luca de Meo, prices for combustion engines will have to rise by up to 2,000 euros in the future. VW’s brand boss Thomas Schäfer even goes by one Plus up to 5,000 euros out if manufacturers are forced to further develop petrol and diesel engines to be even more environmentally friendly. In addition, forced investments in the combustion engine Leaking money from the development of e-cars.

According to Wissing, the EU must Take criticism from car manufacturers seriously. “The EU Commission cannot, on the one hand, demand high climate protection targets and, on the other hand, prevent their achievement through regulation.”

The prices of cars, whether combustion or electric, are already high:

The FDP man also sees jobs are disappearing, when the artificial price explosions turn the car into a luxury item. Consequently, car buyers would suffer from higher prices, while on the manufacturers’ side jobs are at stake – one grim prognosis for both sides.

With his statements against Euro 7 – at least in the current form of the draft – Wissing also supports the prime ministers of the German car states. Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) for Baden-Württemberg, Markus Söder (CSU) for Bavaria and Stephan Weil (SPD) for Lower Saxony had previously requested in a joint letter from the Chancellor that Germany should not agree to Euro 7.
