Why the practical function sometimes fails

Anyone who often waits impatiently for the next parcel is familiar with DHL’s live tracking function. With it you can follow live on the “last mile” where your shipment is, how many stops are still ahead of you and when the package will finally arrive. DHL now reveals why the function is sometimes not available.

DHL Live-Tracking: Only if everything goes according to plan

Parcel announcements and shipment tracking are old hat for DHL and its customers. So-called live tracking is much more recent. This allows recipients to see in real time where their delivery is currently, i.e. track the route of the delivery van. A practical feature, especially if you have to run errands, for example. But the function has long been not always available and with every broadcast.

Over 80 percent of delivery tours across Germany should currently be activated for live tracking, explains DHL (source: PCWorld). They are working to keep increasing this proportion. The feature started in spring 2020 and has been rolled out since then. Customers have access via the Post & DHL app or on the Deutsche Post website.

DHL gives a clear reason for the fact that the function is not always available: “In principle, we always offer live tracking when there is a high probability that we will know the information displayed on the delivery time and the delivery stops can also comply. “ You only share the information if you manage the delivery time indicated with it. This way no false expectations are aroused.

Because things can go wrong from time to time: the delivery situation is complex, especially in cities. Because of this, “due to changing routes and strongly fluctuating shipment volumes, our forecast for delivery times and delivery stops cannot always be made,” explains the company. Before giving false information, the function is sometimes deactivated in areas where live tracking can already be used. The volume of traffic, but also the weather, play a role here.

Both sides benefit from DHL’s live tracking

Even if not all challenges have been solved yet, DHL stands behind the offer. It is intended to improve the customer experience, ensure a high delivery rate and also enable recipients to to return your own parcels directly to the DHL courier. It is then unnecessary to walk to the packing station.
