‘Why the iPhone 13 won’t be much faster than the iPhone 12’

The iPhone 13 will be announced next month, but we already know that the device will not be much faster than the current top model. That’s right.

Read on after the ad.

iPhone 13 comes too early for faster chip

The iPhone 12 came out at the end of 2020 and runs on an A14 Bionic chip. A chip can best be seen as the engine of a smartphone: the better the processor, the faster and more powerful the device.

According to website DigiTimes Apple is behind the scenes making their chips faster. The iPhone maker would do this by making smaller and therefore more efficient smartphone chips.

DigiTimes has spoken to sources in Apple’s manufacturing chain who claim the company will move to tiny chips of 3 nanometer structure (3 nm) next year. The current Apple processor, the A14 Bionic, is just a bit bigger: 5 nm.

Advantages of smaller chips

The advantage of smaller chips is more speed. Tiny smartphone motors provide proportionally more hardware power, making the device better suited to demanding tasks, such as playing games and editing photos. An additional advantage is that smaller chips generally use energy more efficiently. This stretches the battery life of your iPhone.

Now for the bad news. According to DigiTimes, the lightning-fast 3 nm chips will not be ready for use until next year. In other words, the Apple products that will be released this year, such as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, are missing the point.

The new Apple smartphones from 2021 will therefore most likely have ‘only’ a 5nm chip in the form of the A15 Bionic. This will be disappointing news for some, but chances are that the majority of potential iPhone 13 buyers will not be bothered by it. After all, Apple’s current chips are powerful enough for most everyday tasks.

The next speed boost is rumored to be made in 2024. Then Apple would like to switch to chips with a 2nm structure, which should be even faster and more energy-efficient.
