Some thermostats include a subscription. This is usually the case because you purchase the heat regulator from an energy supplier. Some think this is fine, but not everyone is enthusiastic about this. Why? Because the costs add up quickly.

A calculation example

For example, a relatively small amount of 4 euros per month is already 48 euros within a year. This amount increases to 96 euros within two years and 240 euros within five years. Moreover, in most cases you do not pay off the thermostats, because you receive them on loan. If you go to another energy supplier, then you have to hand in the device again and start again from scratch.

When you say “smart thermostat”, most people probably think of Nest. Google’s thermostats have been at the top of sales lists for years and those looking for the best of the best should look to the V3. This smart thermostat works without a subscription, is packed with functions and also has a very stylish design.

You can buy the smart home device in all kinds of colors, such as copper or black. The Nest Learning V3 thermostat can handle all types of boilers and is very ‘smart’, as you can tell from the name. For example, the larger screen lights up when you enter the room. The thermostat also gets to know your usage and automatically adjusts the settings accordingly.

However, for Apple users, Nest thermostats also have a significant drawback. They do not work with HomeKit, Apple’s smart home system. That’s a shame, because it doesn’t allow you to control the Nest thermostat through the Home app on your iPhone. For this you have to download the separate Nest app. Speaking of which, the app is well designed and works very well.

2. Honeywell Lyric T6

Honeywell also offers a smart thermostat without a subscription. The Lyric T6R does everything you would expect from a thermostat and comes in two versions: wired or wireless. The wireless variant is expensive, but the entry-level version of the Honeywell Lyric T6R is surprisingly affordable.

An additional advantage: it can handle Apple HomeKit. So you can add the smart thermostat to the Home app on your Apple devices and control the temperature with your voice, for example. The Honeywell thermostat listens to Siri, the digital butler of your iPhone.

The smart thermostat without a subscription also has disadvantages. For example, it is a pity that zone control is missing. As a result, you cannot regulate the temperature per room. The thermostat is also difficult to install. You have to reconnect the existing wiring (or buy the more expensive wireless version).

3. Netatmo Thermostat

Do you want a very affordable smart thermostat without a subscription? Then the aptly named Netatmo Thermostat is worth a look. It is relatively affordable and you do not have to pay extra monthly to use all functions.

The device does what you can expect from a smart thermostat and has HomeKit support. It is also worth it for non-Apple users, because you can connect it with almost all common smart home systems.

A disadvantage of the Netatmo thermostat is that it does not support OpenTherm and only fits on an on/off boiler. Moreover, the device only works on batteries – which you have to replace every so often – and opinions are divided about the design. Some find it childishly ugly, others call the Netatmo minimalist.

4. Outsider: tado Smart Thermostat V3+

We consciously include this smart thermostat as an outsider. Technically, it is not a smart thermostat without a subscription. As a user, you get the choice: take out a subscription or not?

Anyone who pays 2.99 euros per month (or 24.99 euros per year) gets access to all functions. For example, you can set a zone control to regulate the temperature per room, for example. You can also use the open window detection with a subscription: as soon as the tado thermostat notices that there is a draft, the temperature drops.
