Design: iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini vs iPhone SE 2022
Apple has been progressive in the field of design for a while: as few protrusions and holes as possible and a sleek design. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini also follow this line. Their screens fill almost the entire front (except for the ‘notch’) and the aluminum frame provides a sleek finish. There are ‘only’ four physical buttons on the devices: off/on, two volume buttons and a ‘silent mode’ button. Less is more according to Apple.
Still, the new iPhone SE 2022 does not participate in this trend. This smartphone with a recycled design from 2017 has the look of the iPhone SE 2020. That means that the SE 2022 still has a home button. The iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini have long since left these behind.
Furthermore, Touch ID (fingerprint scanner) is also present in this home button. The iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini work with the faster and more secure Face ID (facial recognition). In terms of design, it is a clear trade-off: do you want a glitzy modern phone? Then choose one of the minis. Do you want clarity in the use of your iPhone by the home button? Then the iPhone SE 2022 is the best buy for you.
Small differences in dimensions and weight
Would you prefer an iPhone that you can easily slide into your pocket? Then you have come to the right place with all three telephones. However, there are minor differences.
The iPhone 13 mini is a few millimeters thicker than the 12 mini: 7.4mm versus 7.7mm. This makes the 13 mini slightly heavier: 141 grams compared to 135 grams. So it makes almost no difference, but the 13 mini is slightly less ‘mini’ than its predecessor. The SE 2022 is the thinnest among these models at 7.3 millimeters. On the other hand, it is the heaviest, highest and widest.
So do you want a thin phone? Then choose the iPhone SE 2022. Are the other dimensions and weight more important to you? Then the iPhone 12 mini comes out slightly better in the test when it comes to actually the ‘mini’.
Cameras of the minis and of the SE 2022
In terms of camera specifications, the iPhone SE 2022 is hugely disappointing in our opinion. Apple’s new budget phone hasn’t gotten any new lenses and it still doesn’t support Night Mode either. This contradicts the line Apple is taking with the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini. While there have been some software updates for the SE’s camera, this phone is not a recommended purchase if you enjoy taking pictures or videos. The iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 13 mini are much better phones for the photographer.
