which one should you buy? 6 big differences

Google has presented two new flagships with the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro, which focus heavily on exclusive functions thanks to the computing power of the Tensor G2 processor. However, in terms of hardware, there are also important differences, which we discuss here.

Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro differ

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro were announced at the Made by Google event. This year you no longer have to get the phones abroad, because they are also in stores in the Netherlands. All you really need to do is compare the two models. In terms of software, they can count on the same exclusive features, but these are the differences in terms of hardware and price.

1. Scratch-resistant housing

Dimensions and weight:

162.9 x 76.6 x 8.9mm, 212 grams

155.6 x 73.2 x 8.7mm, 195.5 grams

Housing:

Gorilla Glass Victus (Front & Back), IP68 Certificate

Gorilla Glass Victus front and Gorilla Glass 6 back, IP68 certification

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro each have a design that builds on the Pixel 6 series. The camera looks more refined and the back is finished with matte glass. The phones are similar in size, but there is one important difference in terms of durability.

The Pro version is the only one with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on the back. It makes the phone survive a fall from 2 meters, while the Pixel 7 only offers protection up to 1 meter with its Gorilla Glass 6. Gorilla Glass Victus also protects twice as much against scratches, according to manufacturer Corning. Both phones sometimes have screens that are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.

2. Screen size, resolution, refresh rate

Google Pixel 7 Pro Google Pixel 7

Screen:

6.71-inch QHD+ AMOLED (1440 x 3120 pixels), 19.5:9, 512 ppi, 120Hz, 88.6% screen-to-body ratio, HDR10+

6.3 inch Full HD+ AMOLED panel (1080 x 2400 pixels), 20:9, 416 ppi, 90Hz, 84.7% screen-to-body ratio. HDR10+

The Pixel 7 Pro has a screen that actually has better specifications across the board. It’s a larger 6.71-inch panel than the 6.3-inch screen of the base Pixel 7 model. Still, the Pro screen is sharper because there are more pixels per inch. The panel of the Pro version has a QHD resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels, while the Pixel 7 has a Full HD display.

You can also expect a higher 120Hz refresh rate with the Pro version, compared to 90Hz with the Pixel 7. it makes animations look a bit smoother. Both phones have an AMOLED screen, but only the Pro version has an LTPO panel, which allows it to save energy. Finally, pay attention to the screen-to-body ratio, because the Pixel 7 Pro has slightly finer screen edges than its little brother.

3. Working Memory

Processor:

Google Tensor 2th Gen (4nm)

Google Tensor 2th Gen (4nm)

Random access memory:

12GB LPDDR5 RAM

8GB LPDDR5 RAM

Storage:

128GB / 256GB UFS 3.1

128GB / 256GB UFS 3.1

We can be very brief about the different achievements. Both phones have the same chipset, and that plays the biggest role. Nevertheless, the Tensor G2 has more RAM to play with with the Pixel 7 Pro: 12 GB compared to 8 GB with the Pixel 7. In practice you will only notice that difference in few situations, because with 8 GB you can already multitask well with different apps on android.

4. Telephoto or not

Google Pixel 7 Pro Google Pixel 7

Rear cameras:

50 MP wide angle camera (PDAF, OIS), 48 MP telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom (PDAF, OIS), 12 MP ultra wide angle camera

50 MP main camera (PDAF, OIS), 12 MP wide-angle lens

Cameras for:

10.8MP

10.8MP

The Pixel 7 takes over the main camera, wide-angle camera and selfie camera from the Pro version, but it lacks the telephoto camera. The Pixel 7 Pro can zoom in up to 30x with that lens, and there’s again 4x optical zoom.

Yet the zoom performance of the base model has also been improved again, because Google made it clear during the announcement of the phones that zooming is mainly due to the better image processing. The extra computing power of the Tensor G2 now manages to optimize pixels even more with digital zoom.

5. Battery Size

Google Pixel 7 Pro Google Pixel 7

Battery:

5000 mAh, 30 watt fast charge, 23 watt wireless charge, reverse charge, USB PD 3.0

4355 mAh, 30 watt fast charge, 21 watt wireless charge, reverse charge, USB PD 3.0

The Pixel 7 Pro is the larger phone of the two, so it makes sense that it also gets a large battery. However, that does not mean that the Pixel 7 Pro with its 5,000 mAh battery will last longer than the Pixel 7 with its 4,355 mAh battery.

The two devices are difficult to compare on paper, because the Pixel 7 has a smaller screen with a lower resolution, which is theoretically more economical. On the other hand, the Pro version has an LTPO panel that can dynamically adjust the refresh rate, and it shows fewer frames per second when animations aren’t a factor.

6. The price

Google Pixel 7 Pro Google Pixel 7

Price:

899 and 999 euros

649 and 749 euros

The Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro have the exact same price difference that we saw with the previous generation. On all the above points, the Pro version has the better specifications, but you also pay a significantly lower price for the base model. The question is therefore whether the better screen and the telephoto camera are important to you.

At the bottom of this article you can see all the specifications side by side. Which phone appeals to you the most? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
