‘When I got home I saw my daughter on her own in the playground’

Finally found that perfect babysitter, you come home and your child suddenly runs outside alone or you get a ‘warm’ welcome from your little dragon.

Susan (33): “Every Wednesday afternoon I had a babysitter for my daughters Fenna, who is five and Saartje, who is two. Eighteen-year-old teacher training college student Mia picked up the eldest from school, gave the children a sandwich and played with them until I got home from work at five. Everything went fine for a year.

Deep sleep

A month ago I came home in between to pick up my laptop. As I drove down the street, I saw Fenna dead alone in the playground. At home I found Mia fast asleep on the couch. Little Saartje was playing upstairs and was happily emptying the commode. I was half hysterical. Mia woke up with a start and casually claimed that she was so tired from her exam week that she had gone to lie down. I fired her on the spot. Then no babysitter.”

Another candy

Nadia (27): “We had to go to a funeral and found through an official nanny for our two-year-old daughter Zoë. When we picked her up she was sitting quietly on the couch, surrounded by big bags of candy and liquorice. And when she got up she threw up on everything.”

horror image

Mirna (35): “I came home from work and asked surprised: ‘Gosh, are the kids in bed yet?’ My mother-in-law was sitting on the couch watching TV and replied laconically, “No, they’re still in the bath.” My children were one and a half and three. I dashed upstairs.

It’s been nine years now, but still a horror image. It’s hard to fire your husband’s mother, but luckily my father-in-law came to the rescue. From then on he would happily come along when babysitting was needed and she never lost sight of them. Grandpa is still babysitting, grandma is now deceased.”
