WhatsApp on Apple Watch: WristChat just works

There is still no real app for WhatsApp on the Apple Watch, but luckily there is now WristChat. With this you actually don’t need an official app anymore!

WhatsApp is by far the most popular chat service in the Netherlands. It’s just a shame that there isn’t an official app available for the Apple Watch (or for the iPad, but that aside). Now it is of course possible to show notifications from WhatsApp on your Apple Watch, but that is not the same as a real app on your smartwatch.

WristChat Apple Watch: Forget the official WhatsApp app

Surprise, because that’s about to change. WristChat is not an official app for WhatsApp, but it comes pretty close to a real WhatsApp experience on your Apple Watch. WristChat can be downloaded from the App Store and costs 2.99 euros.

WristChat: Send WhatsApp messages and view conversations

After you have installed and set up the app, you will see the recent messages from WhatsApp on your Apple Watch. This is similar to the Messages app and Telegram app on Apple’s smartwatch. You can then tap a conversation to view all messages in that conversation. However, it is not possible to start a new conversation with WristChat, which is a shame.

You can of course send messages from the app. You do this when you open a WhatsApp conversation in WristChat on your Apple Watch. However, sending messages is only possible with the capabilities of your Apple Watch. For example, the Apple Watch Series 6 has the option to respond with suggestions (short keywords, such as “ok”, or “yes”). But do you have a new Apple Watch Series 7? Then you have access to a full keyboard for the ‘full experience’.

Do you also want to use a complete keyboard on an older Apple Watch? Then the makers have a nice app for you. WristBoard gives you access to a complete keyboard on your Apple Watch, even if you don’t have an Apple Watch Series 7. Note: The keyboard only works in WristChat and Messages.
