‘It had to be a top year now’

Everyone woke up on time, the champagne poured generously and ready for the countdown moment. You better have that first blunder of the new year out of the way, right?

Eline (42), mother of Olivier (12), Benjamin (10) and Anemoon (7):

“Last year we celebrated New Year’s Eve with our neighbors and their two children. We had woken up the whole thing on time, before the sounding moment and bought special children’s champagne. Together with the neighbor I poured eight champagne glasses. But one minute before time, we were just about to start counting down, we heard a huge bang.

Happy New Year

The neighbor bumped the edge of the table and all the glasses fell like dominoes. It really happened in a split second. Instead of wishing each other a happy new year, we stood there mopping up and vacuuming up all the sticky bits of glass.

“’Well, shards bring luck’, I shouted”

‘Well, shards bring good luck,’ I shouted. It had to be a top year now. In the end, ten past twelve we did the whole moment all over again. In paper cups.”
