WhatsApp makes it easier to send messages to unknown people

The next time you need to message an unknown number on WhatsApp, the process will be easier than ever. First, start a new discussion on the platform. Then type the number in the search bar. A “Chat” button will appear next to it, allowing you to start a conversation with that person without having to save their number in your phone.

Available on Android and iOS, the new WhatsApp feature should make life much easier for many users, who, for example, have to contact strangers for work. This feature eliminates the need to use third-party apps or the official click-to-chat APIs.

This feature also presents a significant advantage in terms of user privacy. Previously, it was common for people to save unknown contacts in their address book in order to see their WhatsApp profile pictures and easily recognize them in the future. However, these contacts often remained stored indefinitely, even after the conversation ended.

By allowing users to look up phone numbers without saving them, WhatsApp therefore provides an additional level of privacy. For once, this feature is not limited to beta users, and should be available to all users using the latest app update. If it is not yet deployed to you, it should be in the next few days. In the meantime, know that WhatsApp is also working on replacing your phone number with a nickname.
