Photos and videos will soon be sent in high quality via WhatsApp. The popular messaging service is currently testing three different quality options. The low quality of images and videos has been a major annoyance for many users for years.

Soon it will finally be possible to send and receive photos and videos without huge loss of quality. WhatsApp is known for compressing sent media considerably to save data usage and storage space. The resolution of a sent photo or video drops to such an extent that posting on social media is hardly possible anymore. For professionals, the loss of quality is already a disaster.

The Facebook service tests three different quality options. Users can optimize their data usage in this way, reports WABetaInfo. WhatsApp will therefore not force you to send media in high quality. A simple screenshot can still be shared in low resolution.

The three different shipping options are:

  • Best quality: WhatsApp compresses the media as little as possible, so that the quality of the image or video remains optimal.
  • Car (recommended): WhatsApp itself chooses the degree of quality loss. With this option, media probably looks as we are used to from WhatsApp.
  • Data saving: WhatsApp compresses the media extra heavily, making the size of the media as small as possible.

Why this new WhatsApp feature is so useful

Maybe you recognize it; your best friend took a picture that you want to post on Instagram. You will receive the photo via WhatsApp, but when you enlarge the photo, you can almost count the pixels. Since you have an iPhone, but your friend has an Android smartphone, AirDrop is not an option. Bluetooth also does not work again. What now?

Of course there are all kinds of apps that make sharing media easy, but nobody wants to take unnecessary detours. This new feature of WhatsApp is going to save many people a lot of headache in the future.

It is unknown when the feature will be available to everyone. Often such features are first available on Android smartphones. Since the feature is currently in beta, it won’t be long before we can share our adorable cat photos and high-quality college diplomas with Grandma.
