The 9-euro ticket will start in June 2022. You can use it to travel anywhere in Germany at a low monthly price. Not only Deutsche Bahn is involved, but also regional public transport. But what is actually possible with the 9-euro ticket and what is not? We’ve put together what you need to know.

9 euro ticket: what is it?

The 9-euro ticket is a measure taken by the federal government to compensate for some of the current price increases in everyday life. For one Monthly price of 9 euros all citizens should be able to use local transport throughout Germany. In our article you can find out what else we want to do to relieve consumers.

When is the 9 euro ticket valid?

The 9 euro ticket is valid from June to August 2022. The first day on which you can use the cheap ticket is June 1st. After August 31st you can no longer drive it. There is no blocking according to the time of day as with many federal state tickets, so you can still use the 9-euro ticket early in the morning or late at night. The period of validity always corresponds to one calendar month, so you cannot buy a ticket from June 5th to July 4th, for example. If you have a valid 9-euro ticket, you can use it as often as you like in the corresponding period.

Where is the 9 euro ticket valid?

You can theoretically with the 9-euro ticket travel all over Germany. Both Deutsche Bahn and regional transport companies and urban public transport take part and should accept the ticket. However, not all transport companies or associations have already commented on this.

There are also restrictions: You can only use the local trains of the Deutsche Bahn with the 9-euro ticket, the long-distance trains like ICE, IC and EC are not included. This will lead to a problem that Deutsche Bahn points out before the start. You also have to buy ordinary tickets for long-distance buses.

In the cities you should be able to use the 9-euro ticket for buses, trams and subways. However, it is very unlikely that the urban public transport companies will oppose each other. Difficulties are only expected when buying tickets, if smaller companies in particular cannot change the processes in the background in good time.

How do you get the 9 euro ticket?

The 9-euro ticket should are offered digitally and can be purchased directly via smartphone and also digitally controlled. In addition to DB, several regional and urban public transport providers want to offer the 9-euro ticket directly via their own apps. But if you don’t use a smartphone, you should too find it at the ticket machine will. It is still unclear whether, for example, Deutsche Bahn will also sell the 9-euro ticket at the counter.

Final certainty about the procedure is expected from May 20th, when the Federal Council has voted on the plans as the last authority.

This is not possible with the 9 euro ticket

In addition to the restriction to local transport, other things are not included in the 9-euro ticket:

• bike transport is not included, you have to buy a bicycle ticket for local transport in addition to the 9-euro ticket. However, Deutsche Bahn advises against this, as it cannot be guaranteed that you will be taken with you, as many passengers are expected.
• Children from 6 years need their own ticket. Children under the age of 6 travel with their parents free of charge.
• rides in the 1st Class are also not possible with the 9-euro ticket.
• Seat Reservations in local transport are usually not offered. Therefore, they are also omitted with the 9-euro ticket.
• Further discounts, for example in combination with a BahnCard, are not planned, the 9-euro ticket is treated like a monthly ticket at DB. This cannot be combined with the BahnCard discount either.

What do season ticket holders and subscription customers get from the 9-euro ticket?

The 9-euro ticket should benefit all citizens. Season tickets and ticket subscriptions are therefore also affected. If you have a season ticket, a monthly ticket or even an annual subscription with the DB, with which you can use local transport, the prices will be charged. Affected customers will be informed by Deutsche Bahn in advance whether there will be a credit or whether a reduced price will be debited directly (source: Deutsche Bahn). However, this does not apply to subscriptions for long-distance transport or the BahnCard 100.
