What will the design of the iPhone 13 be? These are the expectations

What will the design of the iPhone 13 be? That question has haunted Apple fans for a long time, so it’s time for a quick look ahead. We already know this about the design of the new iPhone.

Read on after the ad.

Expectations: the iPhone 13 design in pictures

A short disclaimer in advance: the iPhone 13 has not yet been officially presented. As a result, only Apple is currently one hundred percent sure what the device looks like. However, the device has often been passed in recent months in rumors, leaked photos and computer animations.

We can therefore make a very nice estimate of the iPhone 13 design. That is why we do that in this article. These are our five expectations.

Index: iPhone 13 design in five expectations

1. Gap year for iPhone design

Just to get straight to the point. It seems that 2021 will be a gap year for the design of the iPhone. In other words: we do not expect very big changes.

We think the iPhone 13 has about the same design as its predecessor. So get ready for an industrial design with an angular housing, upright edges and a ‘flat’ screen.

The front consists largely of screen with thin edges all around. At the top of the screen is the familiar notch, about which more later. We will probably see the back of the iPhone 12 on its successor and the distinctive Apple logo is not going anywhere either.

2. New Camera Layout

That said, the rear does change a bit. The camera lenses are now not under each other, but at an angle from each other. The format of the module is probably not tinkered with. Only the layout is different.

It is not yet clear why Apple chooses to do this. A logical explanation has to do with augmented reality (AR). By placing the iPhone 13 cameras diagonally, the quality of augmented reality apps can be improved.

Now you can also look at the position of the device diagonally, instead of just vertically. As a result, apps know your location sooner and you can place digital objects in the ‘real’ world faster.

This expected improvement only applies to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Only these devices have a LiDAR sensor on the back. The ‘regular’ iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini seem to have two camera lenses on the back, but no special depth scanner.

3. Less moving pictures

If we look very closely at the camera of the iPhone 13, we come across another innovation. It looks like Apple is bringing sensor shift to all new iPhones this year.

This sensor ensures less jerky photos by stabilizing the camera sensor. Currently, only the largest (and most expensive) Apple phone has sensor shift, the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

4. (Slightly) smaller notch

In 2017, Apple shocked the world by hiding the iPhone X’s front camera and Face ID (facial recognition) sensors in a notch at the top of the screen. Four years later, little has changed about this notch, much to the dismay of many.

The iPhone 13 seems to improve on this ‘problem’ somewhat. All iPhone 13 dummy devices show a slightly smaller cut-out. That’s nice, because this gives you more space at the top of the image to display information.

5. More colors?

Finally, a pretty speculative rumor about the iPhone 13 design. Some sources claim that the entry-level model appears in all kinds of fresh colors. This would not be strange at all, because the iPhone 12 can already be bought in six editions: blue, green, red, white, purple and black.

In addition, Apple is increasingly releasing colorful products. The 2020 iPad Air and 2021 iMac also all have summer jackets to choose from. We don’t know yet which colors the iPhone 13 will get.

More about the iPhone 13

After the strange year 2020, things will become a lot more normal in 2021. At least when it comes to Apple. We expect the iPhone 13 presentation ‘just’ in September.

We will of course look ahead in the coming weeks, but we already know a lot about the new devices. On the overview page below we will inform you from A to Z. Prefer to watch? Then check out the accompanying video.
