What we know about Meta’s new app

The Twitter alternative Threads should be available in Apple’s US App Store in a few days. Behind the app is the Facebook mother Meta, who wants to provide Twitter with tough competition.

On our own behalf: Currently, many people are looking for a Twitter alternative. t3n is also on Mastodon below https://t3n.social/@t3n active.

Mark Zuckerberg’s meta is considered a particularly strong rival to Elon Musk’s Twitter. Unlike Twitter, Meta currently has no financial difficulties and can draw on a base of over a billion already connected users, because the Threads app is connected to Meta’s photo and video app Instagram. Unlike other Twitter competitors like Mastodon, Bluesky and T2, Threads doesn’t require the creation of new community networks.

Meta’s copy & paste tactic successful

Meta has successfully copied services and features from rivals in the past. For example, the Stories format invented by the photo app Snapchat has proven to be a huge success. The short videos called Reels, with which Instagram and Facebook copy the Chinese app Tiktok, are also enjoying increasing popularity.

Twitter competitor Threads is expected to launch on July 6th. The app imports users’ Instagram followers and followers lists and allows them to interact in a Twitter-like interface. You can like, comment, repost and publish posts. You can also specifically choose which target group should see the posted posts.

Meta also apparently plans to integrate the app with the decentralized social media protocol called Activitypub. In this way, users could also take their followers to other platforms. It is speculated that Meta is trying to attract celebrity users to promote the app.

Musk recently imposed tweet viewing restrictions on Twitter. Paid subscribers can read up to 10,000 tweets per day, while non-subscribers are limited to 1,000 posts. Musk justified this step with protection against data theft on Twitter.

After the announcement, problems arose with Tweetdeck, where, among other things, the display of lists was disrupted. Tweetdeck, which previously enabled an ad-free and automatically updated display of tweets, will soon be subject to a charge.

The launch of the Threads app will further fuel the business duel between Musk and Zuckerberg. The two tech billionaires had already announced an exhibition fight in the ring in June. It is not yet known when the service will also be available in Germany.
