This part is shorter than the first, as Thompson takes a more general view of the state of artificial intelligence research and its evolution, to what extent it may become socially relevant in the future;
- the third part “The Future of AI” is where much of the body of the book is. It starts by talking about a few social impacts that AI will have, then examines the myriad ways this technology can be used to benefit society. This chapter covers the following topics: AI applications (e.g. language translation, speech recognition), AI applications for crime fighting/crime prevention, AI applications for education and training of human-powered machines. It shows how to create an autonomous vehicle using artificial intelligence and explains what we can expect from self-driving cars in the future.
