Major update to Telegram lets you hide content

Telegram will come at the last minute of 2022 with a major update that we will probably use fully in 2023: the ability to hide content. For example, you can post a meme about a TV series in a group, but add a spoiler alert for those who have not yet seen the episode.

You can now have a photo ‘covered’ on the messenger. If someone wants to see what’s underneath, they only have to tap it. You do that by tapping in the top right corner when you send a photo (in a group, in a channel or in a 1-on-1 conversation) and then choose ‘Hide with spoiler’. There will then be a kind of glitter effect on the photo and someone will have to tap it to view it.

In addition, something new is coming to the app. There will be a new storage management page. Here you can see a pie chart with everything you have stored locally within the app. That way you can more easily see what’s taking up a lot of space on your phone and choose to maybe delete some photos and videos from your phone. The upside is that you can still fish them out of Telegram’s cloud. Telegram states: “Telegram takes up almost no space on your device. You can delete media and documents from your phone’s storage and re-download them from your Telegram cloud at any time. For years, users could set a maximum cache size or automatically delete unused items after a certain period of time. With this update, you can add separate auto-delete settings for cached media from private chats, groups, and channels – with exceptions for specific chats.”

Delete chats automatically

It is also now easier to set when chats are automatically deleted. That way, you can make sure Telegram takes up a defined chunk of space no matter how many chats you engage in. Two handy, big innovations, but there are also some nice small innovations to make the app a bit more fun. For example, there are new progress animations and you can create custom profile pictures. In addition, the drawing tools have become a bit smarter: they change width based on your drawing speed and lines are automatically smoothed.

In the upcoming updates, we plan to further refine the media editor interface and improve its performance.”
