Beards in “Movember”: What is it?

“Movember” is composed of the terms “November” and “Moustache” for mustache. The “Movember” originated in Australia. In 2003, after a drinking spree, a group of Australians wanted to resurrect the mustache. Participants were approached by outsiders about their new face jewelry, encouraging the men to use the attention for a good cause.

So in the coming days and weeks you will come across more and more profile pictures of men with mustaches on social media. But there is no fun action in the foreground. Instead, the aim is to draw attention to serious issues relating to male health. In the meantime, Movember has developed into a worldwide movement for a good cause. Fundraising campaigns raise money for research projects, especially for research into diseases such as testicular and prostate cancer.

A notice: The “Movember” was started as a charitable campaign. In the meantime, however, the event has become very well known and is often used as a marketing tool. So it’s now not always obvious whether you want to present yourself as a participant of the fundraiser with a mustache or just let the beard grow because it’s hip in November.

The aim of the movement is to collect donations for research into and the prevention of diseases specific to men, such as prostate cancer, but also depression and bipolar disorders. For the fundraising project created its own websitewhich is also available in German.

  • Those who take part in Movember don’t do so with a funny video like the “Ice Bucket Challenge”, for example, but show this with a mustache that they let grow in November.
  • You usually start November clean-shaven and let your mustache grow in the following days and weeks.
  • The Movember should not be an excuse to only make a visual change.
  • Rather, the aim here is to raise awareness of certain diseases.
  • In addition, of course, donations should be collected, especially for the fight against testicular and prostate cancer.
  • Anyone who takes part in “Movember” becomes a “MoBro”.
