What about the chips in the iPhone 14 series?
All those different news stories about the chips in the iPhone 14 series can be confusing. Will the regular iPhone 14 really get an ‘old’ A15 chip and what are the consequences of that?
Read on after the ad.
iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro get different chips
Yes, you read that right. All rumors indicate that the iPhone 14 will receive an older chip than the iPhone 14 Pro, namely the A15. We also find this in the current iPhone 13 and 13 Pro. The iPhone 14 Pro has a new A16 chip, which is expected to be a bit more powerful. This would be the first time in iPhone history that Apple has launched a new model with an outdated chip.
Of course that sounds like a big setback, but in practice it is probably not that bad. The A15 chip is already lightning fast. The iPhone 13 never lags, apps load in no time and the device flies through photo and video editing. The same also applies to the A14 chip in the iPhone 12 and even the A13 in the iPhone 11 still runs like a charm.
A15 chip is overkill
Although it feels crooked to put an older chip in a brand new iPhone, in 2022 that is actually not such a big problem. Most people use their smartphones for social media, messaging, taking pictures and a game here and there. The current A15 chip is already decent for this overkill – let alone the A16.
For the people who do need the most powerful, fastest and most energy-efficient device, there is the iPhone 14 Pro. However, we do not expect the A16 chip to be a huge upgrade compared to the A15. Who knows, you might notice more of it in three to four years, but with the current app range, the differences between the two chips are probably nil.

More about the iPhone 14
All iPhone 14 models will reportedly get a better selfie camera with autofocus. They also last longer, because the battery is a bit bigger. Furthermore, the innovations for the regular iPhone 14 seem to be disappointing. In addition to its slightly older chip – which we discussed in detail in this article – the device also retains almost the same design as that of the iPhone 13.
The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max do get a number of major innovations. In addition to an A16 chip, they also get a new design, with two small holes in the screen for the selfie camera and Face ID sensors. The controversial notch is therefore a thing of the past. The camera on the back is also significantly better. It has a resolution of 48 megapixels and supports capturing 8K videos.
