‘We went to one place where my boyfriend couldn’t surf’

If you have only arrived cold at your idyllic destination, your partner is already splitting through the waves or chasing the wind.

Maureen (38) is married to Joris (38) and mother of Mats (6) and Liv (4):

“My husband prefers to chase the wind. For example, we traveled along the coast of western France for years. The wind determined the location and his mood. After we drove for two hours in a different direction, the conditions turned out not to be perfect and he was also grumpy.

I put a stop to that: nowadays we stay somewhere for at least three nights. Looking nice at daddy is an illusion when the sand is blowing in your eyes and the children are crying in pain. Every now and then all three of us put on diving goggles and watch for fifteen minutes. Because a man with a passion is also wonderful to behold.”

Could be worse

Meike (43) has a relationship with Pim (44) and is mother of Sem (6):

“I’ve developed a sort of mantra for myself: ‘Golf surfing is better than skeet shooting or Formula 1 racing’. Imagine spending your entire vacation on that. In the past 25 years – that’s how long we’ve been together – we’ve been to a place where Pim couldn’t surf: Tuscany. What a rest; there we did not have to take the tides and the wind into account.

When Sem was little, we always went to sea somewhere in the spring and autumn. High waves, few people. Perfect for Pim, but I often sat from our camper van looking at a drizzly coastline, with a toddler who had no way out.

“When he is texted that the waves are now perfect, he is no longer with his head”

Unpredictability is the biggest stumbling block on our vacations. When we already walk through a market or through a castle and Pim is texted by a surf buddy that the waves are perfect now, he is no longer with his head. And so we’ll all be back on the beach in no time.”
