We want this Microsoft Edge feature in Chrome right away

Microsoft Edge now lets users open two split-screen tabs on their monitor at lightning speed. It works at the touch of a button, versus the various steps you have to go through in Chrome to do the same. We explain.

Microsoft Edge split screen

Sometimes new features for apps are incredibly simple, yet more powerful at the same time. As someone who works with split tabs on their PC on Chrome every day, I’m watching a new feature of Microsoft Edge with great interest. At the touch of a button in your browser, two open tabs appear in split screen on your monitor. Windows Central has discovered that.

That sounds so logical, as if this is a feature that should have been in every browser for years. On large computer monitors – and especially on ultrawide screens – working in split screen is quite normal. Still, many more steps are required in Chrome today to get two browser windows side by side.

The split-screen button can be found to the left of the address bar

First you need to create two tabs, then you can click and drag a tab to one side on the desktop. That sometimes wants to go wrong, and then the tab takes up the entire screen against will and thanks. If it went well, the tab will only appear in one half of the screen and you will be given the option to choose a different window for the second half of the screen. Then tap the second browser tab.

Availability

At this time, Microsoft Edge users can only test the split-screen button in the unstable Canary version of the browser. After that, the feature is also expected in the stable variant. It is currently not yet possible to open more than two tabs side by side with this button and we wonder if that will change.

Although Chrome users with a large monitor will mainly wonder when they will see this in their browser. At this point, there are no signs that Google is working on a similar feature. Such a split-screen button could also be useful in the Chrome app on tablets and foldable phones. After all, with Android 13, Google has already made efforts to make it easier to use the split screen.
