We live in notification hell

We all have apps on our smartphones and this can make your life notification hell!

It all starts nice and nice. You download an app and the app asks for your permission to send you push notifications. Yes, why not you think. Handy if you know when someone sends you a message in whatever form. But then you download even more apps. And more. The result is that you are inundated with apps that scream for your attention.

The notification hell exists

Apps never sleep and keep pushing notifications. An offer here, a WhatsApp there, a new photo on Insta and so on. We all recognize it, the notification hell. This has not always been the case. Especially in the early days of apps.

For a while, companies like Apple didn’t just let app developers do anything with the power to grab our attention at any time of the day. They insisted that power should be used for good, not evil. That didn’t last long, though. App developers are now allowed to send us marketing notifications, as long as we’ve opted in to do so. Just check with yourself: we always give permission.

And by the way, the call is now even coming from within. Apple promotes its services in settings menus and Samsung tries to sell you a new phone.

back to normal

That will not happen. Well, there are some tricks to limit it. Think iOS where you can collect time-sensitive notifications in a daily summary and deliver once a day.

Of course you can turn everything off, but then you miss a lot. That is not the intention anymore. Until there is no real good solution, we are stuck with this misery.
