Better late than never as the saying goes. Waze, the mapping application with 20 million users in France, has finally caught up with the competition on a very specific point: the display of charging stations for electric cars.

It was about time, since Google Maps has been offering this feature since December 2022. On the Mountain View company’s app, users can search for plugs compatible with their vehicle and sort the results by terminal type, payment network or charging speed.

For the 2022 summer vacation, Waze partnered with Norauto to display electric charging stations on the main highways. Only, the app was far from displaying the full fleet of terminals available in France (13,000 out of more than 82,000 today), and above all it did not remain active for very long. Because, Waze removed it on August 28, 2022.

Waze finally shows fast charging stations

But good news, Waze has just confirmed in a press release the return of display of nearby charging stations of your location. Now Wazers will be able to view on the map the location of the terminals, the types of outlets available, their number and their power. And this time, all of the country’s terminals will be displayed. And Waze being above all a participatory app, the data will be updated in real time thanks to user contributions.

To take advantage of it, nothing could be simpler:

  • Wazers will be asked if they drive electric vehicles and what types of plugs they need to charge, right on the app
  • Once the information is updated, Wazers will be able to search for charging stations and find the ones that best suit their needs

Be careful however, Waze specifies that the functionality will be rolled out gradually in the coming weeks. Currently available in Brazil and Israel, the display of charging stations will be accessible in France between mid and end of April 2023 according to the app teams.
