It is quite rare that the Northern Lights can be seen so clearly on the Dutch horizon. Did you miss the natural phenomenon yesterday? Then there is good news, because tonight you have another chance. The northern lights can also be seen well from the Netherlands tonight, if the clouds allow it.

Of course you want to capture the northern lights as well as possible with your iPhone, especially because it is such a rare natural phenomenon. This can sometimes be difficult, because you normally take photos with better lighting. iPhoned explains how to take the best photos of the northern lights.
Take photos of the Northern Lights with your iPhone
To photograph the northern lights, it is of course important to first find the northern lights on the horizon. The natural phenomenon can be found – as the name suggests – in the north. It’s best to check whether you’re looking north using the compass on your iPhone. The Compass app can be downloaded from the App Store:
As soon as you see the Northern Lights, you can start taking photos with your iPhone. For this it is important to first turn on the night mode, which is explained in the step-by-step plan below. Here’s how to take the best photos of the Northern Lights with your iPhone:
- Open the Camera app and swipe to ‘Photo’;
- Tap the arrow at the top to open the additional settings;
- Set night mode to maximum (this is the dot with the moon);
- Tap the screen to focus on the Northern Lights and hold your finger on the screen until the AE/AF lock is enabled;
- Make the exposure slightly darker, this is the ball with the plus and minus sign;
- Point the camera at the Northern Lights and set a timer (the ball with the dial) of 3 seconds to take the picture.

More tips for photographing the Northern Lights
To get the best result, it is wise to use a standard, so that you get as little movement as possible in your photos. By zooming in, trembling hands and movements can be seen more quickly in the sharpness of the photo. This is the best way to photograph the northern lights with your iPhone.

It is also advisable to play with the settings of your camera, especially with the exposure of the photo. After all, this depends on how well (or brightly) the northern lights can be seen.
