Waiting even longer for super fast internet and because of this
With 5G you have super fast internet, but we have to wait longer before it can be rolled out completely in the Netherlands.
Some people believe that the internet is a necessity of life. They may be right, because without the internet you are cut off from a lot of information these days. Anyway, the fact remains that if you have internet that speed is super important. Today, this is going through 5G. But the auction of the 3.5 GHz frequency for this will not be in April 2022. And that’s a shame, because this frequency is needed for a faster network.
Waiting longer for super fast internet
The auction will be postponed until a specified moment, says Mona Keijzer as outgoing State Secretary. This is stated in a letter that she has sent to the House of Representatives. The cause is a discussion with the satellite company Inmarsat. This company has large dishes in Friesland, in the place Burum. For a large part of the world emergency, urgent and safety communication is done with these dishes. For both at sea and in the air, not unimportant. But they use the same frequency. It is also important for the Netherlands that we continue to accommodate that company. The company has been there since 1990.

So 5G and this company use the same frequency. In our country we already have 5G, but this is offered via other frequencies. However, the (extra) speed that this provides is not very great. We really need that other frequency for that.
But what now? As always, a smart advisory committee is put together to look for a solution. The auction can only take place if it is there. Earlier, a judge ruled that Inmarsat does not have to leave. The international agreements on this matter were more important than the government’s wishes to free up the frequency for high-speed internet. It is unclear when we can start enjoying this internet, the advisory committee will come up with a first report in 2022. Unfortunate.
