VW is building two e-cars at an entry-level price

VW is sticking to its plan to build an affordable electric car. Brand boss Thomas Schäfer has now confirmed what the Volksstromer should cost. It shouldn’t stop with just one cheaper electric car.

Not a bargain, but still: VW takes the middle ground when it comes to e-car prices

It is the pinnacle of e-car construction, which many other manufacturers have been working towards since Tesla’s beginnings: a Electric car for the small purse. The big manufacturers like VW had actually aimed for a price tag of 20,000 euros, but that can’t be maintained at the moment. Most recently, Thomas Schäfer, head of the VW brand within the Volkswagen Group, spoke of a price of up to 25,000 euros.

But now VW is apparently aiming for the middle ground: “From the entry-level e-car with a target price of less than 25,000 euros to the ID. Buzz to the new flagship Volkswagen ID. Aero we will have the right offer in every segment,” the manager told the British portal car. With this, Schäfer also confirms that it actually should not come at a price of 25,000 euros.

Lease an e-car and collect an environmental bonus

According to Autocar, the planned price tag of £20,000 is still in place in the UK. Converted, this corresponds to current around 23,000 euros – a sign that VW is aiming for the middle ground when it comes to the purchase price between the pain threshold of 25,000 euros and the original plan to offer an electric car for 20,000 euros.

Schäfer also confirms that it should not stop with a cheap electric car. On the one hand, we can expect an electric successor to the Polo, which is already being traded as the ID.2, for around 23,000 euros. According to the e-car nomenclature at VW, it is below the ID.3 in terms of price and size.

The smaller the difference in running costs, the more important the purchase price becomes for an e-car:

VW finally wants to get involved in compact SUVs

Besides, he should VW T-Cross get an electric counterpart, which is also priced in the entry-level segment. Schäfer describes the successor to the Polo as an electric small car, while the other model compared to Autocar has a “sporty crossover version” speaks. It is precisely this that is likely to be hidden behind the ID.2 X, which we have already reported on.

According to the VW plan, the ID.2 X should do that strong growing interest in electric compact SUVs to satisfy. With the ID.4 and ID.5, Volkswagen has only had real SUVs ready so far, which are correspondingly much larger.
