VR headset with ‘realityOS’ in the making

The new mixed reality headset that Apple is working on runs on ‘realityOS’. This is evidenced by multiple references in the source code, including that of the App Store.

Apple headset with realityOS

There have been rumors for years about the development of an AR/VR headset by Apple. It has also been expected for some time that the device uses a new operating system. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg already spoke of rOS in 2017, which stands for Reality Operating System.

The references in the source code indicate that Apple chooses the name realityOS. They have been noticed by developers, among others, in the open source code and logs of the App Store. This means that the mixed reality headset (VR and AR) has its own App Store.

Developer Steve Troughton-Smith also pointed to references to a realityOS simulator. This allows developers to test AR and VR apps before the Apple headset is available. Mark Gurman previously reported that the headset is designed for gaming, streaming video content and communication, such as video calling.

Apple Reality as a name?

If realityOS is the name of the operating system, then the name of the VR headset is easy to guess. An operating system usually starts with the name of the device, followed by OS: macOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS.

If Apple opts for realityOS, it is possible that the headset is called the Apple Reality. Other names speculated about were Apple Vision and Apple Sight.

Launch

Apple seems to be planning to officially announce the headset this year, although this is still doubtful. The reliable Bloomberg recently reported that Apple is facing quite a few technical challenges, such as overheating. An announcement can therefore be postponed to 2023.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo – another reliable analyst – the headset will be extremely powerful. It offers computing power comparable to the Mac’s M1 processor, and switching between VR and AR is said to work seamlessly. The headset is also reportedly equipped with two 8K screens.
