Is your smoke detector already installed? (adv)

You can’t imagine your house going up in flames. However, you and your neighbors can just fall victim to a fire and then the most important thing is that you are warned first so that you can get yourself to safety.

Smoke detectors are mandatory

Since July 1, it is mandatory to have a smoke detector on every floor of your house. A smoke detector goes off by means of a siren and/or a light signal as soon as smoke is detected at the location where the detector is installed. This detector can save your life if a fire breaks out when you and your family are sleeping. A smoke detector is a simple piece of technology and can be purchased for less than € 20.

Smoke detectors with an app

These smoke detectors have an internet connection. The accompanying app also sends you a notification on your smartphone. This comes in handy when you’re not within earshot of the smoke detector, or when you’re not home at all. Even then it is useful to know what is going on at home.

The most common causes of fire in the home

A fire doesn’t just happen. By removing as many possible causes for a fire as possible, you minimize the risk of damage to your property. The four main causes of a home fire are:

  • Electrical devices
  • CV boiler or meter cupboard
  • Cooking on gas
  • Candles, cigarettes or fireplace

Fire caused by an electrical device is one of the biggest causes of fire in a room. It is therefore important to always choose equipment that meets the applicable regulations. Chargers for your smartphone, for example, are also increasingly responsible for a fire. For example, don’t buy the cheapest charger for your smartphone and unplug it when you’re not using it.

How do you hang a smoke detector?

Use a smoke detector that lasts at least 10 years, so you don’t have to worry about the battery for a long period of time. You can hang the smoke detector with screws or with the supplied double-sided adhesive tape. Install a smoke detector on every floor. Preferably also in the areas that are closed off, the faster you detect the faster you are safe. Place the smoke detector at least 50 centimeters away from a wall or corner and at least 30 centimeters from a lamp. Do not place a smoke detector near ventilation openings or a heater, as these can cause a false alarm. Be sure to check out these smart smoke detectors on AW Smart.
