Video game sales collapsed in Europe in July

Dark clouds are gathering: if we are to believe numbers of the market research company GSD, sales of video games in Europe literally collapsed in July. Whether it’s games in physical or digital format (downloads), the drop is severe with a 38% drop in sales compared to July 2021! 8.62 million video games were sold in Europe over the period concerned.

The biggest fall is to be attributed to physical games for consoles (Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation): only 297,420 physical games in this category passed over the month of July (still in Europe), i.e. a decrease sales of 48% over one year! So of course, the console figures do not include sales made in the United Kingdom and Germany, but still…

The absence of major new features for this month of July as well as the difficulties in obtaining a next gen console (Xbox Series, PS5) probably did not help, but the concerns of the sectors could be deeper, especially in a context inflationary that forces households and individuals to review their purchasing priorities.
