Vidate is the first video dating app from the Netherlands

Vidate is a Dutch dating app that consists entirely of video. Singles rate each other based on an unedited profile video of a maximum of 20 seconds.

Corona and dating

While the need for real contact is increasing day by day during the corona pandemic, dating is more difficult than ever. Now that almost all meeting places (catering, offices and schools, sports clubs, etc.) have been closed, only dating apps remain. But these do not fill the need either. For example, in the average dating app it takes 38 hours before real contact is made. And when this happens, there’s always the chance that your match will be better online. For these reasons, Janet van Zelderen (28) came up with Vidate, the first dating app in which all contact moments take place via video.

According to Van Zelderen, Vidate differs from other dating apps because all contact moments take place via video. “This means you have real contact with each other much faster and you can better assess who you have in front of you,” says Janet van Zelderen, inventor and founder of Vidate. “From my own experience I know how annoying it is to swipe for hours, only to find out after a superficial chat conversation that it is a different person than the photos suggested.”

This is how Vidate works

Where the average dating app takes 38 hours before real contact is made, Vidate takes a different approach. For example, the app contains a personal profile with one proposal video of twenty seconds. Then you scroll through other profile videos in the app and you can schedule your first Vidate. The first video date lasts five minutes. If this is a success, an online date of thirty minutes will follow. If both parties still see each other afterwards, they can exchange telephone numbers.

According to Vidate, video not only speeds up dating, it also makes it safer and fairer. In addition, the application deliberately contains no filter options, making catfishers a thing of the past. Van Zelderen: “In our application there is no room for fake profiles or heavily edited photos. You have twenty seconds to show yourself as pure as possible. This naturally requires courage and creativity. But when it works, the ice is instantly broken. That’s how dating becomes the way it should be again: honest and exciting. ”

What does Vidate cost?

You can use Vidate for free. The app does show advertisements, but they are from local entrepreneurs. Vidate does not want to bore users with irrelevant advertising, but only shows advertisements from, for example, catering establishments in the area. In this way, the company wants to support them in these difficult times.
