Used e-cars are traded like the PS5
It’s the new absurdity when buying scarce goods: Buy up quickly when something is available and then sell it on to the real prospect at a higher price. Scalping has been a nuisance on the PlayStation 5 for months. A similar situation is now evidently occurring at Tesla.
Conditions like the PS5: Used Teslas are more expensive than new cars
Scarce availability, delivery problems and production downtime have shaped the automotive industry over the past few years. It also messed up the used car market. A look at the USA shows how extreme the prices can be: there are many used Teslas are currently offered at higher prices than identical new vehicles.
Apparently, the days when a car was a commodity that lost value over time are coming to an end – with the exception of particularly exclusive models and vintage cars. At Tesla, resellers can charge surcharges even if there are tens of thousands of kilometers on the clock (Source: electr).
In the USA, for example, a Model Y is offered through Tesla’s used car sales department, which has already covered around 48,000 km. For 1,000 US dollars more are called than for the current identical new car. The value of the older Tesla has therefore increased even more, after all the car manufacturer has massively increased the prices for its models. According to Electrec, 2020 Model Y should now be available $6,000 to $10,000 more in value be than when buying.
In Germany: Prices for used and new Teslas are almost the same
This development can also be observed with the cheaper Model 3. In Germany, however, the phenomenon has not yet arrived with this clarity. A brief comparison shows the Model 3 offers for used vehicles that are below the new price. But here too is the loss in value is small: Actually, a minus of 25 percent of the list price applies to cars in the first year. A Model 3 from 2021, which is offered by Tesla used, currently costs just 1,000 euros less than the identically configured new car.

Especially in the current situation used e-cars have an invaluable advantage: In contrast to new cars, for which customers sometimes have to wait up to two years, used vehicles are available immediately. Apparently, you can afford to pay a little more for that. In addition, Tesla probably pre-installs the FSD software for autonomous driving on all used vehicles in the USA at no extra charge.
