Unreleased Apple product makes the rounds

Apple usually keeps unreleased products under wraps, but that’s not the case in this case. In the last few weeks, such a find has been making the rounds of collectors in Asia. The “Apple Magic Charger” was or is intended for the iPhone. But there is probably a reason why this will no longer appear officially.

The oddity was first spotted by the Twitter user “TheBlueMister“, but other collectors have also published pictures of a so-called DVT version of the device. DVT is a “design validation test”, i.e. the necessary preliminary stage for testing a possible production. So it’s not yet an actual mass-produced device, but it’s also no longer an abstract prototype.

Unknown iPhone charger: The Apple Magic Charger

The name of the device already reveals the function, because the “Apple Magic Charger” is a charger with MagSafe technology. In the center is a rubberized white MagSafe charging puck. It’s in a square of anodized aluminum. Attached to it is an integrated and braided USB-C cable.

The special feature: the real one Loading puck can be erected. We already know something similar, for example, from the charging pad of the Apple Watch with the MagSafe Duo charger. Only in this case can the charging base for the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 be folded up.

Design flaws revealed

Unfortunately, there is a small limitation in this design. An iPhone can then be erected only in landscape format use, an upright alignment is ruled out due to the construction. Of course, the iPhone can be placed in any position lying flat, and AirPods can also be charged over it.

MagSafe briefly explained:

For the missing portrait mode, the loading puck would understandably have to be attached much higher, for example on a kind of telescopic rod. According to Twitter user TheBlueMister, this landscape mode limitation is also why Apple decided against series production Has. But who knows, maybe there will soon actually be a modified series-ready variant that can also be used upright.
