Twitter only allows up to five changes

About a week ago, Twitter announced the first test phase for the edit button. But the new feature will not allow users to freely edit their tweets.

A few months ago, Twitter announced efforts to create an edit button. But the tweet “We are working on an edit button” triggered mixed feelings among users.

But that was mainly because the tweet from the official Twitter account was sent on April 1 of all days.

The edit button is probably the most long-awaited function on Twitter. At the beginning of September, the short message service announced that the first test phase for the new function had started.

Yet how TechCrunch now reportedthe edit button won’t bring Twitter users the unlimited editing freedom they might have expected.

The Edit button and its limitations

It was previously known that Twitter users can edit their tweets up to 30 minutes after publication. But Twitter also limits the number of changes.

Because within the given time, users can only change their tweets five times. This should probably be sufficient for correcting typos.

It is likely that the short message service wants to protect itself from abuse with this limit. After the announcement of the new function, experts had criticized that it could be misused to spread fake news.

Twitter explained this to TechCrunch, it is currently monitoring user behavior. The number of possible edits in the 30 minutes after publication can also change again.

Who can currently edit their tweets?

The edit button is currently only available to a small group of subscribers to the paid Twitter Blue. The first phase of testing is underway in New Zealand, as TechCrunch writes.

In a further step of the test phase, Twitter also wants to activate the edit button for subscribers in Australia, Canada and the USA. However, this could take a while, since Twitter first wants to collect more information about the user behavior of the new function.
