Twitter isn’t Twitter anymore, it’s X Corp

Elon Musk recently had the “W” in the Twitter logo taped over the company’s main building in San Francisco – allegedly to annoy the landlord. Since then, the lettering on the house at 1355 Market Street has not featured “Twitter” but “Titter”. Now the Twitter boss goes one step further and renames the company.

Twitter merges with X Corp

Twitter is no longer called Twitter. Elon Musk has merged Twitter Inc. with X Corp. The merger of the two companies is an indication that Elon Musk still has big plans for the company, which he has been turning upside down since the beginning of his takeover: He wants to turn Twitter into a kind of super app called X.

New name evident in court documents

Incidentally, the fact that the merger came to light is not due to Elon Musk, but to right-wing activist Laura Loomer and a court dispute. She sued Twitter for violating federal law when the company suspended her account in 2019.

The court documents on the case that have become public reveal an interesting detail: Twitter Inc. merged with X Corp on March 15. The company also belongs to Elon Musk and was only founded on March 9th.

A super app for everything

X Corp is owned by the holding company X Holdings Corp. According to another ongoing lawsuit against the company, filed by two Florida attorneys who have also been banned on Twitter, X Corp is incorporated in Nevada and based in San Francisco, California.

On Tuesday, Musk tweeted “X” as if to confirm what the court documents officially state. Even before his acquisition of Twitter, Musk had written: “The purchase of Twitter accelerates the development of X, the app for everything”. Buying Twitter could accelerate the app’s development “by 3 to 5 years.”

What exactly does Musk have in mind?

The Twitter boss wants to create a super app based on the Chinese app WeChat, because in China people basically live on WeChat “because it’s so useful.” In addition to messenger functions, WeChat also offers the possibility of posting job advertisements publish, order taxis and groceries, book doctor and government appointments or apply for travel visas.

Looking at Elon Musk’s recent efforts and discussions surrounding the Twitter Blue subscription, it’s clear that the Twitter boss has a soft spot for paid features. So it’s safe to assume that X will likely be a monetized, closed environment where users are expected to be active all the time.

How long it will ultimately take until the super app is ready for the market remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that Musk still has plans for Twitter.
