Transfer WhatsApp: from Android to iPhone
After years of testing, the time has come: WhatsApp can now transfer all your data and chats from Android to your iPhone. The feature is now available to all users.
It’s a shame you still have to use the Android app Switch to iOS (made by Apple). It would have been nicer if you could control the transfer from the WhatsApp settings.
Export WhatsApp: Switch with Switch to iOS
When you have installed the switching app on your Android device, you can get started. You must have at least Android OS Lollipop SDK 21, or Android 5 installed on your Android phone for this. Your iPhone needs iOS 15.5 or later.
Transfer WhatsApp from Android to iPhone
- Open the ‘Switch to iOS’ app on your Android device and follow the instructions;
- Copy the code from your iPhone to your Android device, tap ‘Continue’ and follow the instructions;
- Choose ‘WhatsApp’ in the ‘Data transfer’ screen, tap ‘Start’ and wait for your Android device to be ready;
- Tap ‘Next’ and ‘Continue’ to transfer your data;
- Install the latest version of WhatsApp from the App Store;
- Open WhatsApp and log in with the same phone number you used on your old device;
- Tap ‘Start’ when prompted and wait for your device to be ready;
- Complete the activation on your iPhone.
This WhatsApp data is transferred from Android to iPhone…
All your messages in WhatsApp will be transferred, including your personal chats. Data you’ve transferred won’t be saved to cloud storage until you back up your iPhone to iCloud. Also important to know: the data will remain on your Android phone unless you delete WhatsApp or erase your phone.
… and this data is not included in the transfer
There are a number of things that WhatsApp cannot transfer. Thus, your WhatsApp call history will not be transferred from an Android phone to an iPhone. In addition, payment messages from WhatsApp Pay (not available in the Netherlands) are not included.
