In honor of the 15th anniversary of Google Maps Street View, Google thought it would be fun to travel back in time. In Street View mode it is now possible to view the historical images of your favorite locations. In this article you can read step-by-step how to do this!
Google says in a blog post that this new function shows historical places up to 2007. That year, Street View was added to Google Maps. This feature has been available in the desktop version of the Maps service for some time. Now you can also time rise in Google Maps with your iPhone.
This is how you check how it used to be at your favorite location
First make sure you have updated the Google Maps app to the latest version. Then go to the place where you want to time travel in the app on your iPhone. This can be your house or your favorite bench during that nice walk.
If you tap on the photo there to get more information about the location, a menu will appear. There it says ‘view more data’. If you tap this you can view the historical footage of that specific place.
NB! Not every location has seen the Google Street View car equally often. Some locations have only a few photos or you can only look back a few years. At well-known places you often have more options. In addition, Google is slowly rolling out this update. So it may take a while before the function appears on your iPhone.
