This wind turbine is home to its own aquaculture

The Chinese company Mingyang Smart Energy is expanding the functionalities of its wind turbines and making room for its own aquaculture.

The demand for energy from sustainable energy sources is increasing. Because Germany recently got out of power generation by nuclear power plants. Other energy carriers have to compensate for the reduced performance. Wind turbines remain a type of energy generation that the federal government is now prioritizing.

In addition to generation on land, the operation of offshore plants is also quite lucrative. Because on the water, the systems hardly take up any usable space and at the same time run even more efficiently. However, wind turbines offer much more potential. The Chinese manufacturer Mingyang Smart Energy has now demonstrated this.

Wind turbine is home for complete aquaculture

Then off the coast of Yangjiang the company would like to convert a wind power plant to aquaculture. To do this, Mingyang Smart Energy attaches a fishing net to the underwater part of the facility. in one Post on LinkedIn the manufacturer says that there are up to 150,000 fish in 5,000 cubic meters of water.

Breeding is mostly self-sufficient. The system also feeds and monitors the animals automatically. The manufacturer says that the quality should be similar to that of free-living fish. The reason is the lower level of pollution compared to systems located directly on the coast.

Wind energy: possible solution to conflict with fisheries?

One reason for the creative use is probably the ongoing conflict between wind farm operators and fisheries. Where there are wind turbines, companies can no longer fish for safety reasons. With aquaculture you kill two birds with one stone.

The question is to what extent hybrid wind turbines provide sufficient yield. Furthermore, it is still completely open how the new type of fishing will affect the sales of local businesses. Nevertheless, an interesting concept that could one day make school.
