Secure individual conversations in WhatsApp

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that makes it possible to lock individual conversations. Previously, the entire app could already be secured with Face ID, but now there is an option. You no longer have to put the entire app behind Face ID, but you then have the option to secure individual conversations in WhatsApp.

Secure conversations will be placed in a separate, locked list after the update. This list can only be opened by using Face ID or Touch ID. Super handy, because that way you know for sure that a private conversation cannot just be read. Do you also want to properly protect your conversations in WhatsApp? You can read how to do that below.

This is how you lock chats in WhatsApp

Locking chats in WhatsApp is done in a few simple steps. Face ID or Touch ID is used to secure calls. Can’t unlock the list? Then WhatsApp will ask for your iPhone’s passcode after a number of attempts. It is not (yet) possible to create a separate code for WhatsApp.

How to secure your conversations in WhatsApp:

  1. Open WhatsApp;
  2. Go to the conversation you want to lock;
  3. Tap the contact name at the top of the chat;
  4. Choose ‘Chat lock’;
  5. Turn on “Lock this chat with Face ID.”

Conversations secured with Face ID are moved to a separate list, where you’ll find all locked chats. That list is above the archived chats. You will receive a notification of the secured conversations, but the content will be hidden. This way you can be sure that your apps remain private.

Important detail: WhatsApp has only brought the new security feature to the app for now. The function does not yet work for paired devices. A locked conversation on your iPhone will soon still be readable without Face ID via WhatsApp Web, for example. The company is still working on a feature that can also protect conversations on linked devices.

More new features are coming to WhatsApp

Secure conversations comes to your iPhone with the latest WhatsApp update. It has now been launched, so the new security feature is available to everyone. Don’t have the option yet? Typically, new features are brought to all users within a few weeks after an update. To be sure, also check whether you have updated WhatsApp. So you may have to be patient for a while.
