A common joke about the AirPods is that you lose them easily. Unfortunately, we cannot deny this, but luckily you can find them again with the Find my AirPods function. We show how.

Lost AirPods? Introducing Find My AirPods
Find My AirPods is an extension of Find My iPhone. As long as your earbuds are linked to your iPhone (and therefore to your Apple ID), you can easily find them with this app. In order for the function to work as smoothly as possible, a number of things are important.
The AirPods must be connected to an iPhone, iPad or MacBook for this, because they cannot connect to the internet on their own. In this case, the function always uses the most recently passed location of the AirPods. Even if they are turned off afterwards, you at least know in which environment you should look for them.
How to use Find My AirPods
Through the app you see the AirPods appear on a map, but it doesn’t stop there. You can let the earbuds play a beep sound from your iPhone, which goes through the bone. Very handy if, for example, you have dropped an AirPod loose in your bag or lost it somewhere in your house. That is how it works:
- Open the Find My iPhone app;
- Wait for the app to load your products;
- Choose your AirPods from the list of products and tap it;
- Choose ‘Play sound’;
- Tap ‘Stop Sound’ when you have found the AirPods.
- Are the ears too far away to hear the sound? Tap ‘Route’ and let your iPhone lead the way
It is important to mention that the function works especially well if you have lost the earphones separately. If you lose the earbuds in the charging case, it will be impossible to play the beep sound. You will still see your AirPods on the map – provided they are somewhere in your vicinity, that is. While that may be reassuring, it doesn’t make the search any easier.
When you see a gray dot on the map, the AirPods are offline. As a result, you cannot play any sound or see the current location. You will see the last known location. Unfortunately, you have no guarantee that the AirPods are still here.
