Job market: How to discourage applicants

A study by the Königsteiner Group revealed which criteria are currently preventing skilled workers from applying for certain job advertisements. The result: Many employers – especially in medium-sized companies – still rely on outdated requirements. Around a third of those surveyed said they would not apply for a job if a cover letter was required, for example. The same applies to the question of an application photo – a practice that is no longer used in many countries.

Missing contact details for a personal contact person or a non-existent link to the online application in a digital advertisement also keep applicants away. However, the survey also shows that job advertisements are still very important: 87 percent mainly use them when looking for a job.

Trouble at Reddit: “Minecraft” developer says goodbye

The “Minecraft” developer studio Mojang withdraws from the official subreddit r/Minecraft. The company had previously used r/Minecraft to communicate with the community. According to the company, the reason for the exit is the innovations and the resulting protests and disputes on the social news aggregator. Recently, Reddit decided to charge large amounts of money to third parties who access the site’s API.

As a result, there were protests in the community, to which Reddit reacted by disempowering some moderators. Mojang no longer sees Reddit as the appropriate place “to post official content and direct players there”. In the future, communication with the community will take place via the website and social media channels.

With the ID1, VW wants to bring a small electric car onto the market for less than 20,000 euros. The city car relies on a tailor-made platform, which the corresponding models of the sister brands will also use. Manufacturing costs are to be kept low by lower raw material costs and self-made batteries from a factory in Spain. India is being discussed as a production location. The new lithium iron phosphate batteries are said to have a range of 320 kilometers with an output of 38 kilowatt hours.

Although many manufacturers are currently working on cheap small cars, the ID 1 could be the first electric model that costs less than 20,000 euros. There are currently only two cars of this type on the market priced under 25,000 euros.

Tesla competitor goes bankrupt

The e-pickup manufacturer Lordstown Motors has to file for bankruptcy. Originally, the company had promised a fully electric “heavy-duty truck” for the masses and, in line with the pick-up target group, was even able to inspire US President Donald Trump as an advocate. However, after a successful IPO that raised a whopping $675 million, the company went downhill.

After an allegation by the short seller Hindenburg Research that Lordstown Motors had lied to investors about the number of pre-orders and its own technologies, many jumped off. In order to be able to go into production at all, the company had to be rescued by iPhone manufacturer Foxconn. However, there was also a clinch here and Lordstown Motors was forced to stop production after only 31 models had been built. The stock has since plummeted to $2 from $390 when it entered the market.

Wind turbine tower made of wood will go into operation later this year

The world’s largest wooden windmill tower by the Swedish startup Modvion near the town of Skara is scheduled to go into operation before the end of 2023. The 105 meter high construction is significantly more environmentally friendly due to its design and also cheaper than wind turbines with a steel body due to the simplified transport. A total of 90 percent less carbon dioxide is emitted during production. The model for the wooden tower comes from the Timbertower company and is located in Germany near Hanover-Marienwerder.

While the German wind turbine manufacturers did not make it into mass production, the Modvion succeeded thanks to investments of around 18 million euros. Further towers of up to 150 meters in height are now planned. According to the manufacturer, towers that reach 1,500 meters into the sky are also feasible in the longer term.
